What does a pianist have to be today?

It is often said that Asian pianists are too technical.  I think it’s sometimes true, but not only Asian pianists! For me, the essential question is above all to know why we make music. And my answer can be summed up in one word: purity.

To achieve this purity of music, I chose to work with Theodor Breu, an exceptional pianist capable of producing such moments of emotion. The work on sound is, in my opinion, the key to this purity… I am convinced that a beautiful forest is built of healthy trees. If the pianist manages to master the sound of his interpretation, his musical colouring, then we can do anything! For me, it is the pianist who has to build the sound and not the other way around.

PIANO ACADEMIE began teaching online in 2018.  The first courses were given to students of the school who had left to live in the provinces or abroad. The learning method proposed by Mi-Young LEE, a progressive and structured method lending itself very well to this type of teaching, the transition from the school course to the online course proved effective. The confinement of Spring 2020 was both a gas pedal and a laboratory for PIANO ACADEMIE.

The school has thus been able to develop online courses, not only on private lessons but also for group music courses and also on musical awakening courses, musical comedy courses, dialogue of the arts…

Bolstered by this experience, the school is thus extending its online course offering from the start of the 2020 school year. For each of the courses, the principles adopted are as follows:

  • Registration by the year or for 10 courses
  • Pricing lower than the rate for courses at the school or at home

The principle remains the same as that of our group lessons organized at school. The teacher passes from student to student. The student calls his teacher when the given exercise is completed.

Sheet music for children

Mi-Young LEE wanted to offer children effective scores that they would enjoy taking out and handling.

For young children, she thus wanted to make visually distinct manuals for young female and male pianists.

The pieces that will be taught throughout the year are all tunes known to the greatest number. This is because it is important for young children to enjoy repeating their lessons on a daily basis.

Finally, these manuals ensure that each teacher teaches according to the method devised by Mi-Young LEE.

Piano Académie transcriptions

Piano Académie adapts pieces from all styles of music to enable all its students to play their favorite tunes, whatever their level.

So the school has a list of over 100 pieces broken down into 4 levels of difficulty.

  • Level 1: aimed at beginner students, the transcription nevertheless enables you to play a piece that transcribes the original piece fairly well.
  • Level 2 is aimed at students who have done at least 1 year, or even 2 years of piano. The transcriptions are richer and a fortiori will have a better rendering.
  • Level 3 is a Piano Académie adaptation of the original piece. Here we wanted the piano rendering to be exceptional. 
  • Level 4 is used for certain scores that do not require any particular classification. The score is then accessible to students of all levels.

Estelle is a Franco-Argentinian concert pianist who has won numerous international prizes. Now living in Paris, she has been sharing her passion for the piano for over 5 years.

Gayane Nersisyan

Concert pianist and violin teacher
Gayane Nersisyan was born in Armenia. She began playing the piano at the age of 7. Since childhood, she has taken part in numerous solo and chamber music concerts, as well as with the orchestra.

Beatrice Ruggero

Saxophonist and pianist
Beatrice Ruggero is a Sicilian saxophonist, who graduated with a master's degree in saxophone performance from the Conservatorio “A. Scarlatti” Conservatory in Palermo. She has taken part in several international masterclasses and is active as a music teacher, with a great passion for teaching, especially to children. She performs regularly in concert with various ensembles. Creative and collaborative, she speaks Italian, English and French.

Alba Shkreli

Concert pianist
Born in Zurich, began playing the piano at the age of four. At 18, she continued her studies in Freiburg im Breisgau in Elza Kolodin's class, before joining Rena Shereshevskaya's class at the École normale de musique de Paris in 2022. Winner of several competitions, including the Steinway Competition in Switzerland, Alba is also a passionate and experienced teacher.

Neda Malisic

Pianist, double bassist
During her studies, she took part in numerous festivals as a soloist and in orchestras in Montenegro and several European countries: Serbia, Croatia, Albania, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy and France.

An actor, Paul also has a passion for the piano. His skills as an actor enable him to develop his students' imaginations.

Chiharu Matsuura

Concert pianist
Born in Japan, Chiharu graduated from Osaka Prefectural Yuhigaoka and holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts. Chiharu continued her concert training at the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris in David Saudubray's class.

Rosana Guirado Piñero

Concert pianist
Rosana Guirado Piñero is a Spanish pianist and teacher, specializing in musical interpretation and research. With years of experience in teaching and directing music education, she has taken part in numerous concerts and won several competitions. Passionate, Rosana inspires and guides her students with dedication throughout their musical journey.

Mai Iguchi

Pianist
A pianist of Japanese origin, Mai began playing the piano at an early age. Passionate about ballet music, Mai has been continuing her training at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris since 2018.

Nao TAKAHASHI

Concert pianist
Born in 1997 in Nagoya, Japan, Nao Takahashi began playing the piano at the age of 4, as well as improvising and composing at the YAMAHA school. Arriving in France in 2016, she studied at the CRR de Paris, then at the CNSM de Lyon and Paris, where she obtained a Master's degree in piano. Winner of several international competitions in Japan and France, she performs regularly in concert, notably at the Les Spiriades and Schubertiades festivals. Passionate about chamber music, she plays in duo with violin or cello. She is currently pursuing a Master's degree in chamber music and fortepiano at the CNSMDP, supported by the Meyer Foundation and the Tarazzi Fund.

Federico Di Notto

Pianist
Federico Di Noto is an Italian pianist who graduated with honors from the Palermo Conservatory. He is currently studying jazz and contemporary piano at the American School of Modern Music in Paris. He has won several prizes in international competitions. He has performed as a soloist, in chamber music ensembles and with orchestras. He has taken masterclasses with renowned masters and, in addition to his concert and teaching career, he is co-founder of an innovative project dedicated to musical training, contributing to the dissemination of music through digital means.

Courses :

Our private lessons can take place in our friendly premises or at your home, at your convenience, with sessions lasting a minimum of one hour. For families with several children enrolled, we offer the possibility of 45-minute home sessions. However, please note that as of January 2024, we no longer offer home lessons for children under the age of 8. This decision, based on eight years’ experience, reflects our commitment to educational excellence, which we believe is more difficult to achieve at home for very young children. Our group classes have proven their effectiveness and remain our recommendation for this age group.

Solfeggio

The school offers 1-hour group and online music theory lessons at various times throughout the week.

This allows the children to devote their lesson time to learning their instrument. Music theory is then studied in a dedicated course.

These music theory lessons are included in the price of the lessons.

Examinations

Two auditions are organised during the school year. The purpose of these hearings is to :

  • allow the child to play in public,
  • to enable the school to monitor the progress of each pupil, and to personalise the teaching given to the child,
  • to enable parents to share the joy of seeing their child progress with other parents in the Piano Académie community

Concerts are highlights for our music school. They allow our students to play in front of an audience and above all to show what they have learned during the year !

Concerts are proposed to children and adult pupils.
Mi-Young LEE, accompanied by concert artists, also regularly organises thematic concerts. These concerts allow everyone to exchange on subjects related to music. Thus, concerts on the theme of love, water, wine, Russian art, Chopin and Delacroix, …

My daughter, who will soon turn ten, began piano at Piano Académie five years ago. Since her very first steps at the keyboard, she has grown in an environment that is both demanding, caring, and stimulating, where the joy of playing is always at the heart of learning.

Introduction to piano lessons

For the past 6 years, Piano Académie has been offering 2-year introductory music courses. Since January 2022, we have set up a piano initiation course for children over 4 years old. After several months of operation, we note that the course likes the children and gives very encouraging results. We propose for this year 2022 – 2023 to open an introductory piano course for children who will be 4 years old on October 1st 2022. The course lasts 1 hour with 30mn of musical awakening and 30mn of initiation to the piano in group.

Awakening to music classes for 3 and 4 year olds

Open since 2016, our school’s musical awakening classes introduce children to the world of classical music at an early age. 

Children quickly discover musical instruments, the great classical composers and the different styles (ballet, opera, orchestral music, …).

The classes are composed of 3 and 4 year olds. We want to give them a taste for my music, to help them develop their imagination and their listening skills. All instruments are given pride of place so that later on they can choose their favorite instrument by themselves.

Adults, just like children, need to see immediate results. There’s no question of waiting 5 years to be able to play a waltz by Chopin!

Mi-Young LEE has thus perfected her learning method to enable anyone to play a major work from the classical repertoire very quickly.

How many times has she heard, “I’m too old to start,” “I don’t have time to spend two hours a day,” etc.?

The first step is to choose with the student the first piece he wants to learn to play. Here, there is no pink method or other simplified pieces.

No need to practice for hours

Contrary to what you might think, you don’t need to spend several hours every day:
  • Regularity Before Quantity: Just 15 to 20 minutes of regular exercise a day can lead to amazing results.

When our studios are not occupied by our teachers, we offer the possibility of renting our spaces equipped with pianos to those who wish to do so on an hourly basis. This opportunity is currently only available at our facilities located at 2bis rue Scheffer and Rue Richelieu.Booking times: Our studios are available for booking from Monday to Friday, between 12.00 and 13.00 and 17.00 and 20.00. Please note that on Wednesdays, bookings are possible from 11.00 to 20.00.It is important that each reservation begins on a full hour (for example, 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., etc.). The studio closes its doors every evening at 8:00 p.m.Reservation Procedure: After registering, you will have access to our online reservation portal, allowing you to schedule your sessions up to two weeks in advance.Reservation cancellations are accepted without penalty up to 4 hours before the reserved time slot.
